The Indian state of Sikkim is located in the northeastern part of the country, in the eastern Himalayas. It is one of the smallest states in India, bordered by the Tibet Autonomous Region of China to the north and northeast, Bhutan to the southeast, and the Indian state of West Bengal to the south. Its capital is Gangtok, in the southeastern part of Sikkim. The state is notable for its biodiversity, which includes alpine and subtropical climates, as well as for being a host to Kangchenjunga, the highest peak in India.
The state of Sikkim has four official languages: English, Nepali, Sikkimese (Bhutia), and Lepcha. In addition to these, there are also eight additional languages that are used in an official capacity in order to preserve the culture and tradition of the state. These additional languages are Gurung, Limbu, Magar, Mukhia, Newari, Rai, Sherpa, and Tamang. Nepali is the most commonly spoken language in Sikkim, while Sikkimese (Bhutia) and Lepcha are spoken in certain areas. However, English is also widely spoken and understood throughout the state.
